Three common examples of such evolution include: (1) resistance to treatment, (2) evolution of virulence, or changes in harm caused to the host, and (3) adaptation to novel host species. I explore the evolution of these traits in two systems. First, I use the sea lice-salmon system to explore how intensive aquaculture practices shape parasite resistance and evolution. In addition to understanding evolutionary trajectories and strategies to avoid non-desirable evolution, I describe the possible ecological and economic trade-offs resulting from these approaches. Second, I explore evolutionary emergence of avian influenza infecting and evolving to various arctic marine mammals and seabirds, considering how host stress shapes the likelihood of emergence.
