About

Hatley Castle is an early 1900s mansion with formal gardens, located on the Royal Roads University campus. Originally built for James Dunsmuir, it later served as a naval training facility and is now the administrative center of Royal Roads University.

Visitors can explore the history of the castle, admire its impressive exterior, and discover the lavish interior appointments, including oak and rosewood paneled rooms, baronial fireplaces, and teak floors. The castle's design was commissioned from Victorian architect Samuel Maclure.

The estate also features extensive gardens, planned by landscape artists Brett and Hall. The grounds once included a conservatory filled with exotic plants and a vast network of roads. Today, the castle and its surroundings offer a glimpse into a rich historical past.
