About

Explore the life and work of László Hudec, a Hungarian architect whose iconic buildings shaped Shanghai between the World Wars. The event features a screening of Episode 3 of the documentary L. E. Hudec (2024), directed by filmmaker Chen Qing.

Following the film, three guest speakers will present their insights. Menno Hubgretse, a Continuing Sessional Instructor in Art History & Visual Studies at UVic, will share his research on modern and contemporary architecture. Dr. Heng Wu, Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, will discuss museum studies and cross-cultural representation. Lenore Hietkamp, an architectural historian and editor whose thesis was the first in the world to examine Hudec's life and work, will also present.

After the presentations, attendees can view a display of selected archival materials. This event is co-hosted by The Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives, The Centre for Global Studies, and the Office of Global Engagement, with special thanks to Special Collections & University Archives, UVic.
