SUMMARY:Illuminating Post-Modernism: Contemporary Catholic Art in North Ame
 rica
DESCRIPTION:One of the unsettling things about the St. John's Bible (1998-2
 013) is its mish-mash of styles: icons\, botanical drawings\, splashy abst
ract painting and more come together on the pages of this 21st century ill
uminated manuscript. Its patrons called it a "medieval solution to a postm
odern problem." This is an example of how Catholic Social Teaching impacte
d visual art production in North America in the 20th century. I pay partic
ular attention to discourse and iconography to shed light on how Vatican I
I statements and reforms contributed to the sudden emergence of spiritual
concerns in public scholarship on the arts.Jessica Ziakin-Cook is a doctor
al candidate in Art History and Visual Studies at UVic. Her research looks
at the relationships between Christianity and art in the late modern peri
